last thursday night mr. dtf and i drove to utah with his family. every seat in the car was occupied and it looked to be a LONG trip to a place i don't much care for. i was lucky and slept through most of the trip {mostly just waking up for bathroom breaks} so it didn't seem so bad. still, as we got closer and closer to utah i couldn't help but feel the usual dread i associate with utah. utah and it's crazy weather. with the freezing winter and the snow in may and the burning hot summer. but then something weird happened.
mr. dtf took a turn driving just about the time we were entering utah. this placed me in the front passenger seat to take it all in. and you know what? as we drove into utah and the mountains came into view and i started to recognize city names... i felt at HOME. it was like this weird sense of relief washed over me. and it was confusing, but i just let it happen. cause i guess utah is home now. it is the only place mr. dtf and i have lived alone as a married couple. and it is where i have spent most of my time over the last three years. and it is my home.
i still intend to leave it scornfully behind one day, but i guess when that day comes there will be a sadness that comes with it. a sadness at leaving a place i once called home.
love,
mrs. dtf
isn't that funny? same thing would happen to me on every drive home from school. I intend to move away for good someday sooon, but it'll always hold a special place in my heart. (of course come home to visit). Good luck with your car...hope mr.dtf's skills can fix that baby:)
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about California. I REALLY wanna move back to the east coast someday, but this is home for now.
ReplyDeletei never leave utah, so i would not know what that feels like. lol
ReplyDeletebut i look forward to the day when we both get to look back at utah as we leave with no shame.
but i know what you mean, despite all my feelings of hate towards this place.

I love Utah. Haha even with it's bad winter. But hey today it was 97 and I was loving pool time!
ReplyDeleteYa know, I like Utah, of course I have lived here my entire life, but other than the freezing winters, it's a pretty great place. :)
ReplyDeleteWhere did you grow up? I'm sure it's pretty great too.
i grew up in the san francisco bay area. and i absolutely love that stinkin place.
Deletejealous. I'd love to live by the ocean
DeleteHome is a nice feeling. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteYou pretty much just described by thoughts on AZ perfectly. Maybe it's a common thing, wanting to escape our homes as children and teenagers, only to find later in life that there's something in it that gives us strength and love. How very Gone With the Wind of us all.
